How we train
EMAS are responsible for all our initial training.  Each person that volunteers to be a responder is put
through a four day course which incorporates all the skills and techniques we will use out in the field.
this is not a first aid course, although there are clearly some areas of overlap.  The primary focus is on
the basic strategies that will hopefully preserve a life until a fully trained professional arrives to take
over.   For information on what we are trained to do, please click this link
These courses take place within EMAS training facilities to ensure that all our volunteers are trained
to the highest standard and are confident enough and competent to walk into an emergency situation
with a minimum of background information and deal with whatever they face.
The last day of the course incorporates an assessment of the candidate to ensure that their learning has
been consolidated into a systematic process of assessment and action that will endeavour to preserve a
life until a crew arrive.
Once the EMAS training is complete, our volunteers are qualified to act on behalf of, and under the insurance
of, East Midlands Ambulance Service.  It would however, be a daunting prospect to be out on your own in
some potentially very stressful situations, and so newly qualified VFR volunteers are always paired up with
an experienced responder until they have been out on at least a couple of calls.

We ensure our volunteers are kept up to date with changes in practices, such as the change in the “ERG”
Guidance on resuscitation of 2006, by holding a monthly training meeting.  Below are a selection of photo’s
